Adventure

Considered by adventurous visitors to be one of New Zealand’s top adrenalin destinations, Rotorua is home to a host of thrilling activities, many of them world firsts. Options include white water rafting and sledging, four wheel driving, sky diving from 9000, 12,000 or 15,000 feet, bungy jumping, jet boating and Zorbing.

Family

Walk among towering Redwoods or venture deeper into the Whakarewarewa Forest on a gentle mountain bike ride. Relax on a sandy beach while the kids splash around in a sparkling lake. Rotorua has 16 stunning lakes that lend themselves to water fun galore.

Geothermal

Geysers, mud pools and thermal springs have been attracting visitors to Rotorua since the 1800s and the living, breathing landscape never fails to amaze. A faint sulphur scent lingers in the air, a constant reminder of the thermal activity that is visible in pockets scattered around the region.

Maori Culture

Experience New Zealand’s food, culture and legends with a visit to Rotorua, the cultural heartland of the country. Just over a third of Rotorua’s population is Maori, so the region is the best place to immerse yourself in New Zealand’s indigenous culture.

Mountain Biking

Rotorua is a well-known mountain bike heaven. Just minutes from the city centre is a spectacular forest playground, home to an extensive network of tracks. Towering Redwoods line the road leading to the Whakarewarewa Forest, guarding trails that weave through native and exotic trees.

Outdoors

Any time of year is great for exploring the outdoor wilderness New Zealand – and especially Rotorua – is renowned for. The lakes district offers plenty of walks, varying in length. A 5km walk around Blue Lake winds through pine forest, providing access to good swimming beaches.

Water Based

Rotorua is a well-known aquatic paradise and the perfect spot in which to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The region’s 16 sparkling lakes provide a range of activities for water lovers. Each is seeped in Maori history and most are open for public use.

Wellness

People are always looking for ways to escape the monotony of everyday life and Rotorua, with its abundance of spa treatment centres, is the ideal place in which to do so. Nicknamed Nature’s Spa of the South Pacific, this is a region that knows how to spoil its visitors.
