Picturesque Free Walks Around Rotorua

Rotorua is New Zealand’s geothermal wonderland with plenty of volcanic activity and mystical scenery to take in. With so many picturesque locations scattered around Rotorua it can often be tricky deciding which ones to see.

We’ve rounded up our top picks of free Rotorua locations perfect for exploring on two feet (and with a camera of course!).

Sulphur Point

We start our walking adventure just outside the city centre of Rotorua at Sulphur Point. The walk is located behind the Rotorua Museum and wraps all the way around to Lake Rotorua’s lakefront. A man-made boardwalk will take you through some amazing geothermal areas, meandering through volcanic sulphur flats and mystical, alien-looking wetlands. There are various information points along the track, perfect for learning about Rotorua’s geothermal activity and history.

The walk isn’t too long and not at all challenging but perfect for the whole family or ideal to kill some time. Remember the camera!

Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake)

Lake Tikitapu also known as the Blue Lake is potentially one of Rotorua’s most well-known lakes. Its rich blue colour is due to a pumice and rhyolite bottom which the sun reflects upwards. Walking around this amazing lake will take you just over an hour and is easy going with minimal incline. Heading clockwise around the lake will take you along the shore before continuing into some native NZ bush which then elevates heading north through a section of the Whakarewarewa Forest. There are plenty of spots to take a snap and enjoy the beautiful colours of Lake Tikitapu.

There are plenty of spots along the shore of the lake to enjoy a BBQ lunch and take a quick dip.

Rainbow Mountain

Rainbow Mountain is home to a few dual purpose, walking/biking tracks all of which provide amazing views overlooking the Rotorua region. The two we suggest are the short ‘Crater Lake Track’ & the longer ‘Summit Track’.

The Crater Lake Track is an easy 500m one-way trail that will treat you to views of some amazing cater lakes. The main crater lake is a beautiful emerald colour, ideal for snapping the perfect Instagram shot. Find out more information about the walk here.

For those who want a little more action, the 3km, 1.5hr Summit Track is the perfect example of a short, yet challenging walking trail. The track at some points does get steep, however there are plenty of rest spots along the way. Meandering through the natural New Zealand bush, you’ll encounter many different types of terrain, some still recovering from the 1886 eruption of Mt Tarawera. Once you reach the top however, all that hard work will have paid off. The views are stunning – you’ll just have to see for yourself.
