Top Adventures in the Redwoods Forest – Rotorua NZ.

The beautiful Whakarewarewa Forest is without a doubt one of Rotorua’s most spectacular natural assets and draws many outdoor lovers and visitors to Rotorua every year. It is famous for the towering coastal Redwoods, walking tracks and some of the best mountain bike trails in the world.

There are many adventures to be had in the Whakarewarewa Forest, or The Redwoods as the locals fondly know it. One huge drawcard is that entry into the forest, tracks and visitor centre is FREE!

We’ve rounded up what we think are the top adventures you can have with your family in the Whakarewarewa Forest.

Mountain biking trails at Waipa Mountain Bike Hub

Rotorua is home to some of the best mountain biking trails in world. With a huge mix of trails there is something for everyone from the keen mountain biker right through to first timers and kids!

To reach the best mountain biking trails in the Whakarewarewa Forest, enter from the Waipa Mountain Bike Hub, the trails here are much easier for children and beginners. To get here take the first left off State Highway 5 to Taupo after the Hemo road roundabout & Whakarewarewa thermal area.

Get planning before you arrive and check out the trail maps or arrange bike hire.

After your bike ride, you can wind down and relax at Secret Spot, a local favourite! Eat delicious food, drink some local craft beers, and soak in one of the outdoor hot tubs with picturesque views of the forest. If you don’t feel like a soak, they also offer free shinny dipping with any purchase so you can soak your feet after a long day of exploring the forest. 

Walking Trails from the Redwoods visitor centre

If you love the outdoors and want to be immersed in nature then the Redwoods i-SITE is the best place for you to start your journey. From here there are a range of magnificent walking trails that will take you through the giant Redwoods.

You will find the visitor centre on Long Mile Road off Tarawera road, open every day of the year (except Christmas). Pick up a map or find out more information about the Redwoods & Whakarewarewa Forest before you head off. Pack some water and snacks and head out on an adventure through the Redwoods!  

See the Redwoods Treewalk

The Redwoods Treewalk consists of 21 suspension bridges set up between the Californian coastal Redwoods offering a unique experience and perspective of the Redwoods. Visit during the day or from dusk for a truly immersive and captivating experience. Watch the forest light up under the multi-coloured suspended lanterns designed by David Trubridge. View the spectacular lanterns from the ground or you can buy tickets to the Redwoods Treewalk and view from up above.

Take a Risk With Redwoods Altitude

Redwoods Altitude is the newest attraction in the Whakarewarewa Forest. Take part in this guided experience 25 metres above the ground! Redwoods Altitude boasts 25 Indiana Jones style bridges 650 metres long with 3 flying foxes so you can zoom through the forest. Orienteering through the Redwoods Forest

Orienteering is a fantastic activity that the whole family can enjoy. Thanks to Orienteering Bay of Plenty there are some permanent orienteering courses set up that cater to beginners through to advanced orienteers.

Visit the Redwoods i-SITE to grab a map. You won’t need a compass, just good observations skills! This is a great way to challenge yourself and fun to do with the family or a group of friends.

If you do the course and find you love it, keep up to date with Orienteering Bay of Plenty as they run plenty of competitive orienteering events throughout the year in the Redwoods.
